Keep Puppy Playtime SafeYoung puppies, like children, should ALWAYS be supervised when introduced to a new toy or plaything and you should, in general, frequently check on your puppy during playtime. Watch and observe your puppy's playtime to make sure there are no hidden dangers in the way the puppy plays with its toys. Possible dangers can occur if pieces of a toy are chewed off and ingested and cause possble choking or digestive problems; if the puppy opens up the toy and a squeaker gets caught in the throat or any parts or pieces can get caught in the throat or windpipe; if large amounts of stuffing or other material are eaten or ingested, that can cause digestive blockage and even require surgery; if strings or straps accidentally come off, they can wrap around the neck or other body parts and cause strangulation, cut off blood supply to paws, tails or other parts; and other unforeseen problems or injuries can possibly happen. It is just better and safer to be a vigilant puppy parent and avoid potential problems by keeping an eye on your canine child. We don't mean to sound like alarmists and most puppies will enjoy different types of toys and play with them safely, but again, like children, you can just never be sure what can happen and it is best and safest to supervise and check on puppy playtime often to make sure no unforeseen accidents occur. Of course, as the puppy gets older and you have more confidence in the safety of certain toys or chew things and your dog's behavior with them, less vigilence is necessary, but always keep your ears alert for any strange sounds that might indicate a problem is occurring.
